The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts organized a four-day fair, Indian Handicrafts and Gift Fair, from October 15 to 18, in New Delhi. Its aim was boost handicraft exports. The fair drew the participation of over 2,600 exhibitors and over 4,500 international buyers, and attracted business worth Rs 150 million as compared to last year’s Rs 110 million. Around 25 Indian apparel firms participated in the Great Exhibition of Garments of India which took place in Spanish cities of Barcelona and Madrid. Held for two days each in Barcelona and Madrid, the event saw participation from leading apparel companies of India. Strong demand from the US and Europe and a weak rupee have set the stage for India's garment exports to post a recovery. This is good news for an economy struggling with a large current account deficit.Revenue from garment exports is expected to increase 16 per cent to around $15 billion during the year ending in March. India’s textile industry is on a high. According to Central Labour Bureau’s quarterly survey, the textile industry created the maximum number of jobs from April 2012 to March 2013. It added more than 1.40 lakh jobs during this period. The three-day India International Fabric Expo-2013 held at Colombo saw international buyers appreciating Surat fabrics, including saris and dress materials.This was the first time that the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) had set up a separate pavilion named 'Discover Surat', to display textile fabrics and designs from the city, including embroidery.
