India’s textile industry is on a high. According to Central Labour Bureau’s quarterly survey, the textile industry created the maximum number of jobs from April 2012 to March 2013. It added more than 1.40 lakh jobs during this period. The hike in garment exports also opened up more jobs in the country. “Textile is the biggest industry after agriculture in terms of employment creation. Around 11.2 million workers alone are engaged in the readymade garment sector. With rise in trade, additional employment has been created. A majority of textile companies are SMEs with as low an investment of 1 lakh and six-eight employees,” says A Sakthivel, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council, Mumbai.
The working group of Textiles, Apparel and Jute has forecasted that by the end of 12th Five- Year Plan (2012-17) 15.8 million more jobs will be created.There are several courses being conducted that will have more and more youngsters enrolling and getting equipped with the textile industry aiding its future.
