Ludhiana-based Vardhman Textiles, a leading textile company in India, recorded highest ever quarterly net profit of Rs 177.81 crores for the quarter ended September, 30, 2013. The net profit rose 154 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter last year, when it stood at Rs 69.95 crores. On a sequential basis, net profit increased by 23 per cent. Assam will soon get to witness 16th century handwoven pictorial textile. This is a rare piece of ancient Brindabani 'bastra', created by Srimanta Sankardeva at the request of Koch-Rajbongshi king Naranarayan, which is preserved in the British Museum in London. The 16th century handwoven pictorial depicts incidents in life of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. It was woven by a village of weavers at Tantikuchi in Barpeta district as a gift for Naranarayan under the instruction of Sankardeva. With China cutting imports orders due to withdrawal of some export incentives, Indian cotton yarn exporters are witnessing piling up of inventories and drop in demand. Weak demand in the domestic market is further adding to their woes causing higher inventory levels. Despite the current situation, industry expects exports to reach an all time high of 1,200 million kg in 2013-14 because of the positive demand for cotton yarn from China and South American countries witnessed at the beginning of this financial year. Indorama Ventures Public Company (IVL), the world’s largest polyester value chain company, saw an improvement in its business in the third quarter of 2013, with revenue climbing by 11 per cent to $1.9 billion from $1.7 billion in Q3 of 2012. The company experienced its highest EBITDA of the past eight quarters, up 23 per cent over the last quarter to $131 million. Jaya Shree Textiles, a part of Aditya Birla Nuvo, plans to invest Rs 250 crores to further expand yarn and fabric production at its Rishra (West Bengal) manufacturing unit. It will fund the second round of expansion through internal accruals. The Controller of Legal Metrology recently raided godowns of the Birla Group owned companies at Bhiwandi in Mumbai. Yarns worth around Rs 77 lakh were seized for want of proper packaging on the material. The seized goods comprised yarn manufactured by Century Rayon of the BK Birla Group worth Rs 43, 92, 500 and Aditya Birla Nuvo worth Rs 33, 00, 000. A study by Assocham reveals that about 30 per cent of all the textile mills in India were non-operative in the period 2000-2010. The organized textile sector in India employs over 1.4 million people, contributing about 4 per cent to the country’s GDP and 10.1 per cent to total exports earnings.
